Share the Path: Ride Smart, Ride Safe

UC Davis is piloting Safety Corridors, an education-first approach to stop unsafe riding on campus.

Representatives from the UC Davis Police Department, Transportation Services and Student Affairs will set up temporary Safety Corridors at different high-traffic locations to share safety information and address prohibited riding behavior — starting with conversation and education.

Prohibited behaviors

Our safety teams are watching for unsafe behaviors that put riders and pedestrians at risk.

  • Unsafe speed for conditions
  • Exceeding the posted speed limit
  • Failure to yield to people in a crosswalk
  • Failure to stop at a stop sign or traffic signal
  • Sidewalk riding, tandem riding, or wrong-way riding
  • Unsafe passing
  • Missing required lights and/or reflectors
  • Improper headphone use

Who you’ll see and what they’ll do

  • Two-person teams:
One Campus Safety Specialist from the UC Davis Police Department paired with one Transportation Services or Student Affairs representative.
  • Staff will wear high-visibility vests and be positioned in high-traffic locations.
  • When staff observe unsafe behavior, they will ask the rider to stop for a brief, conversational safety reminder and provide a notice with rules and tips.
  • No names or IDs will be collected and no citations will be issued.

Why this — and what’s next?

Travel on campus is changing rapidly with the growing use of e-bikes, e-scooters and other micromobility devices. While these devices are increasingly popular, they have also introduced new safety challenges.

The proportion of scooter-related crashes on campus has increased dramatically over the past 15 months, underscoring the importance of slowing down and riding with care.

These Safety Corridors are a pilot program and a learning effort. What we observe throughout February will inform future education and enforcement strategies, which may include formal compliance actions and fines for prohibited behaviors. For now, the focus remains education and awareness.

Top Tips for Riders

We need your help to make our campus safer. By following speed limits, staying alert and respecting all users of our shared spaces, you contribute to a healthier and safer UC Davis community.

  • 15 mph speed limit throughout the restricted campus core and on all off-street bike paths.

    • If you don’t know how fast 15 mph is, simply don’t ride faster than a SPIN scooter. Those are limited to 15 mph on campus.

  • Wear a helmet. Get a free helmet through the Helmet Hair Don't Care program.

  • Put your phone away when you ride. Eyes up ahead, not down at your phone.

  • Don’t ride on sidewalks unless signage explicitly allows it.

  • Yield to pedestrians at crossings.

  • E-scooter riders: don’t ride tandem, and remember a driver’s license is required.

  • Headphones: one or none.

  • Ride safe, ride sober.
